The 2014 crime stats for Shreveport are in and it's good news.Police Chief Willie Shaw has presented the numbers to the city council and the overall rate of crime is at it's lowest level for nearly 40 years.

The city police fielded more than 278,000 calls during 2014. There were nearly 8,000 car crashes during the year and 48,000 traffic tickets were issued during the year.

On the crime front, there were 28 murders in 2014 while the city recorded 29 murders in 2013. Chief Shaw says "back in the 1990's we were having 80 plus murders a year.

The Chief did tell the council the numbers of forcible rapes are up 47%, but he added that "rape is the most underreported crime there is." Shreveport police responded to 125 rapes in 2014.

Other categories the chief outlined:

personal robberies up 16%

business robberies down 41%

overall robberies up 5%

aggravated assault down 1%

burglaries down 11%

10,728 overall crimes were reported in the city during 2014. The Chief says the last time the city's crime numbers were below 11,000 was in 1975.
