An officer-involved shooting early this morning in Shreveport leads to an arrest.

Police say just after 3:30 this morning, a patrol officer attempted to stop a 2006 Chevy on Market Street near downtown Shreveport after discovering the license plate didn't belong with the vehicle. The driver wouldn't stop, and led the officer on a chase to the intersection of I-49 and Kings Highway, where both he and his passenger bailed out of the car and ran.

An officer chased the passenger south from the 1100 block of Kings Highway, when the man fell to the ground. As the officer closed in on him, he pulled a handgun and pointed it at the patrolman. The suspect regained his footing and began running again, again pointing the gun at the officer, who fired two shots at the gunman.

Officers tried to locate the man, but couldn't find him. He remains at large, but the driver has surrendered to authorities. He's identified as 30-year-old Joe Thompkins, Jr. He's been booked into the Shreveport City Jail for flight from an officer, switched license plates and three misdemeanor bench warrants.

Detectives are working on getting arrest warrants for the gunman. The car has been impounded, and officers found a small amount of suspected cocaine inside.

Anyone with information that can help in this case is asked to call Shreveport-Caddo Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373.
