Shreveport's Mayor-elect will see a post-Christmas inauguration

Whether you cast your vote for Ollie Tyler or Victoria Provenza, come Saturday night Shreveport residents will finally know who their next mayor will be.

But don’t expect the new mayor to take office before the Christmas holiday. The new mayor is scheduled to be sworn in on Dec. 27.

The reason for the late date is a two-part lesson in civics. First, according to the City of Shreveport’s Code of Ordinances, primary and general elections for local officers are based on the state’s election laws. Secondly, elected officers must be sworn in 21 days after they’re elected.

“Normally, we have a U.S. senator elected by November, but this year, the U.S. Senate race lasts through December and that’s why our elections are later this year,” City of Shreveport’s Clerk of Court Arthur Thompson explained.

Don’t forget to vote Saturday, Dec. 6. Polls will open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Visit the Caddo Parish Registrar of Voters to find your polling place.
