After finding herself in the bottom three last week, Skylar Laine had to prove she deserved to survive another week on ‘American Idol.’ And, as she put it, she “put on a pretty ol’ dress” and showed us something we hadn’t seen yet with an unbelievable performance of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ from the movie ‘Beaches.’

Laine nearly stuck with her country roots and performed Dolly Parton’s iconic ‘9 to 5,’ but after her mentors heard her sing ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ they changed their votes and told her to go with the ballad. Gwen Stefani said, “If she brings that emotion out, it could be a wow moment for her this week.”

She infused the ballad with her signature energy and filled it with emotion. In fact, according to Randy Jackson, it was a “Wow, Skylar. Wow. Wow” moment. He then called it her best performance on the show to date and gave her one more “amazing” before his turn was up. A teary-eyed J. Lo told her she just said to America, “’Do not count me out.’” She added that Laine showed everyone that she can sing with the best of anybody on the show.

Steven Tyler said it was the best song she could have picked for her voice; and the end of the night, he added, “And the beginning of a great career.”

Skylar Laine is definitely back. And her song, which earned a standing ovation from the audience and the judges, was a fantastic way to end the show and more than proved that the competition has now gotten fierce.
