If you’ve ever wondered if this could really happen.  It certainly can.  Just ask a terrified seven-year-old girl who lifted the lid on the family toilet and found herself staring at a seven foot long boa constrictor, say police in Hanover, Germany.

Police managed to photograph the monster snake and call in wildlife experts before it disappeared back down the S-bend, or worse in the house.

Wildlife experts believe the snake was once a pet and had escaped from a nearby home using the sewage system to move around looking for food.

"People buy these snakes when they are young and they grow very large very quickly and scare the life out of their owners who try to flush them down the lavatory or release them into the drains" said one. And then… it comes a day after a Briton happened upon a squirrel in his loo.

Duncan Goose, 42, was in Malawi to check on aid projects when he rescued the forlorn animal.

Mr Goose said:  "It didn't seem too much the worse for wear so hopefully it's recovered from the experience and will go on to have a happy life devoid of toilet bowl experiences."
