It's been proven time and time again that when a community comes together, it's stronger! That's what SPAR (Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation) and the Red River Coalition of Community Gardeners are working towards! Visit any of these community gardens to learn more about healthy living and nutritious foods.

More about the community gardening project from Becky Berry at SPAR:

Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation (SPAR) announce Reaping the Harvest event at three community gardens Sunday, June 15, 2014. SPAR has partnered with Red River Coalition of Community Gardeners (RRCCG) to announce their fifth year anniversary.  RRCCG was created as a program to strengthen the community through gardens.  Community gardens allow residents to learn healthy living and about nutritious foods.  Red River Coalition of Community Gardeners is comprised of 3 community gardens along Olive Street in Shreveport, LA.

These gardens will feature fun activities, food, recipes and nutritional facts for everyone. Homemade carrot cake, soup and confetti salad will be available for people to sample. Visitors can go to Northwest Louisiana Interfaith Pharmacy Garden (909 Olive St. between Line and Fairfield), where they will be able to sample “Party Soup” made with seasonal vegetables.  At Highland Community Garden (Across from Noel Methodist Church at the corner of Herndon and Stephens.), visitors will have the opportunity to try “Confetti Salad” as well as obtain information about using earthworms to make compost for your garden.  At Valencia Park Community Garden (1800 Viking Dr. next to Caddo Magnet High School.), residents will be able to sample homemade carrot cake, along with a garden “treasure hunt”.

Come learn about community gardening and types of locally grown food. Join us in celebrating our fifth year of sharing tips, food and information pertaining to local gardening traditions; bring your own containers to join in on the fun and activities.
