At a meeting Tuesday evening, the Stonewall Town Council voted 4-2 to abolish the Stonewall Police Department. While many residents in attendance were not pleased, the council felt it was the right financial decision to make.

Council member Nicholas Gasper told KTBS that the town has to start paying money towards state retirement and the town just can't afford to keep the department open. Other cuts and taxes were discussed but ultimately the majority decision was made to shut the department down.

The DeSoto Parish Sheriff's office will take over patrol of Stonewall in the police department's absence. The council does have the option to hire DeSoto Parish Sheriff Deputies to patrol the town full time, but no decision on that has been made about that at this time.
