The people have been making some pretty questionable choices for themselves as of late. Some big politics thing is happening tomorrow, there’s that, and last night marked the 43rd Annual People‘s Choice Awards, the populist awards program that does away with the snooty prestige of the Oscars. The evening delivered some rather eyebrow-raising results in its recognition of the most widely beloved entertainers of the year, and though none quite confounded on a Trumpian level, the night was full of what we’ll diplomatically call “surprises.”
Near the end of every year, Forbes releases their rankings of the top actors in Hollywood based on their box-office value and earnings (along with a list of the most overpaid actors, which is always interesting). This year, Scarlett Johansson tops the list of the highest-grossing actors in Hollywood, followed closely by Marvel co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., who tied for second place. Original sci-fi stories are slowly becoming more popular in Hollywood. It’s an exciting prospect, as normally we’re all inundated with adaptations of superhero comics or popular books or remakes of older films that we already know the endings to. Movies like Interstellar and Oblivion are, arguably, a lot more exciting, allowing a director or a writer to create their own world from scratch, and keeping the audience in the dark as to how it all ends. Passengers is one of these, a sci-fi romance with a central mystery at its core that’s bound to keep viewers guessing until the end.
