A mother's worst nightmare nearly came true for a Shreveport mom on Friday night.

A car is stolen from the Wal Mart parking lot on Mansfield Road at about 10pm and there were two young children inside that car. Now, Shreveport police have caught up with the suspect and the children are safe.

Here's information from Shreveport Police Corporal Marcus Hines:

Shreveport Police patrol officers were called to the Wal-Mart Super Center in the 9500 block of Mansfield Road after it was reported a car had been stolen from the parking lot with two small children inside.  As officers arrived on scene, it was learned the mother of the children was in the parking lot talking with an associate, when a teenage suspect jumped in the car and sped off.

Officers began a massive search for the stolen car and it was spotted on Mt. Zion Road near Linwood Avenue. When police tried to get the car to pull over, there was a chase. The 15 year old driver jumped out of the car at the intersection of West 83rd Street at Cleveland Street and ran off. He was quickly captured by officers on foot. The children were not inside the car.

But there is a happy ending to the story. The children were found in the front yard of a home in the 9400 block of McAdoo Street.  Police reunited the visibly shaken children, ages 1 and 7, with their family.

Police are still hunting for the driver of a tan colored Hyundai Elantra, who may have some degree of involvement in the case.  The Elantra was spotted along with the victim's stolen car when officers observed it on Mt. Zion Road.  The driver of the Elantra successfully eluded patrol officers before they could contact or identify him.   Shreveport Police Violent Crimes detectives have now charged the 15 year old teen with two counts each of Simple Kidnapping and Child Desertion, as well as single counts of Aggravated Flight in a vehicle and Resisting an Officer with force or violence.
