In an effort to combat the Louisiana state budget shortfall, New Orleans state representative Walt Leger has introduced a bill that would raise taxes on cigarettes by 22 cents to $1.08 cents a pack. Despite heavy outcry from tobacco retailers across the state who cite the fact that taxes were raised 50 cents only last year, Leger says the increased tax will add revenue to Louisiana's coffers and help more people to quit altogether.
