Two men were shot and killed outside a contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

The suspects pulled up at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland and opened fire near the center hitting a Garland ISD officer. Garland Police shot and killed the two men.

Garland police officer Joe Harn told reporters:

Because of the situation and what was going on today and the history of what we've been told has happened at other events like this, we're considering their car as possibly having a bomb. That process could take several more hours.

The Garland ISD officer, identified as Bruce Joiner, was shot in the lower leg and suffered non-life threatening injuries. He has been released from the hospital.

Earlier this evening, during an event at the Curtis Culwell Center, two men exited a vehicle and began shooting at Garland ISD Security Officer Bruce Joiner. Garland Police, who were on scene, returned fire at the two men, killing both. Officer Joiner was shot in the ankle. He was transported to a local hospital, treated and released. Our thoughts are with him and his family.

Garland Police have secured the area around the Cuwlell Center and Naaman Forest High School. The district is working with Garland PD and will keep you informed as information becomes available.

The Dallas Morning News reports officers set up a 1,000-foot radius around the Walmart and other businesses in the area were evacuated.
