The Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross is operating shelters in our area to help those displaced by the flooding.

Local Chapter Director Michelle Davison says they are operating shelters at the Bossier Civic Center and Southern University in Shreveport. She says 70 people are being housed at the shelters right now, but that number is fluid as some families just come to get a meal or regroup.

She tells us financial donations are the top priority. She says if you would like to donate food items, the best place for that is the North Louisiana Food Bank or the Salvation Army.

Davison tells us the Red Cross does need volunteers as this relief effort will continue for weeks. You can call the office locally at 318 865-9545 to volunteer or log on to help.

Davis says of the 29 parishes the local Red Cross serves, 23 of them have damage.
