Michelle Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide and was sentenced to 15 months in jail and 5 years probation. She will however remain free pending her appeals. Michelle had faced up to 20 years for her crimes.

Michelles boyfriend committed suicide at the age of 18 back in 2014 and she admitted to friends she felt like she was responsible. Texts showed that Michelle not only encouraged him to do it but told him to get back in the car after he got out where he later died from toxic fumes. It even came out that she was listening over the phone as he took his last breaths. The text messages show she had been encouraging him to kill himself for several years.

Lawmakers are saying this case could lead to more laws in Massachusetts making it a crime to encourage someone to commit suicide which is already the case in most states.
