It seems like if we wait long enough, every single TV cartoon will eventually have a big screen version as well. We’ve seen everything from ‘The Flintstones’ to ‘Transformers,’ and now we’re getting another one: Woody Woodpecker.

Universal and Illumination Entertainment have announced that they’re making a big screen version of the long-running cartoon about the pesky woodpecker with the annoying laugh. Illumination also did the animated features ‘Despicable Me’ and ‘The Lorax.’

Woody Woodpecker, originally voice by Mel Blanc, made his first appearance in the 1940s, and it’s certainly not a character that little kids talk about these days, so it will be interesting to see what they do with it. Let’s hope they don’t ruin it.

If you’ve never seen a Woody Woodpecker cartoon, here’s a short from 1943, ‘The Screwball.’
