‘First Reformed’ and ‘The Favourite’ Lead the 2018 Gotham Awards Nominations
It’s nearly Halloween, which means it’s finally time to break out the fall sweaters and scarves, which also means awards season has officially arrived! I sure hope you’re ready to be inundated with non-stop Oscars and awards chatter for the next four months, because the time is here and there’s no stopping it.
Today kicked off the beginning of the 2018-2019 awards season with the announcement of 2018 Gotham Awards nominees. The annual ceremony, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), celebrates the best in indie film and is one of the first major awards of the season. The nominees are chosen by a group of journalists, film critics, and festival programmers, and this year the jury has showered the most praise on Paul Schrader’s First Reformed, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite.
The Ethan Hawke-led drama – a strong contender for my personal top film of the year so far –landed three nominations for Best Feature, Best Actor and Screenplay. Lanthimos’ raunchy period piece earned two nominations as well as a special jury prize honoring all three leads, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz. Other films that earned multiple awards, and will surely be popping up again and again throughout awards season, are Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade, and Boots Riley’s Sorry To Bother You.
Last year’s nominees were led by Get Out, which took home three awards while the top prize went to Call Me By Your Name. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what will leave the Gothams with the most accolades. Out of all these nominees though, I'd say the most likely Oscar Best Picture noms are Beale Street, Roma, The Favourite, and possibly BlackKklansman.
The 2018 Gotham Awards will take place in New York City on November 26, so check back then for the winners.
