2020-2021 Winter Storm Names

Last year there were 19 named winter storms, and this week The Weather Channel has released the names for the 2020-2021 storms. On average, there are about 22 or 23 winter storms per season. Hopefully we won't have to use all of these. This is the ninth year for storm names, and they are based on objective naming criteria from the National Weather Service that include storm warnings, blizzard warnings and ice storm warnings. For a storm to be named it has to include the following criteria: Winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warnings covering at least a population of 2 million, and winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warnings covering at least an area of 400,000 square kilometers.
According to weather.com "Winter storm names exclude any current Atlantic and eastern Pacific hurricane names on the National Hurricane Center lists for the next six years, and any retired hurricane names , which includes those particularly deadly, destructive and historic." Names are chosen by staff members from the Weather Channel, and weather.com
