More than 16,000 people were murdered in the United States last year. That number is down 6.2% from the 2017 numbers. But several cities are still seeing high numbers.

The 3 largest cities in Louisiana are in the top 10 on this list.

But we do have to tell you, overall crime is actually down in Shreveport. The numbers show a 9% decrease in violent crimes compared to the previous year. Murders are down by 15%, rapes by 2%, robberies by 11% and assault and battery fell by 9%

Here are the top 10 cities on this latest list of the most deadly cities:

1. St. Louis, Missouri

The murder rate in St. Louis is 60.9 per 100,000. Numbers are going down in St. Louis, but the killings continue to put the city at the top.

2. Baltimore, Maryland

The murder rate in Baltimore is 51 per 100,000.

3. Detroit, Michigan

The murder rate in Detroit is 38.9 per 100,000 residents. Last year, 261 people were murdered in Detroit.

4. New Orleans

The murder rate in New Orleans is 37.1 per 100,000.

5. Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The murder rate in Baton Rouge is 35.1 per 100,000.

6. Memphis, Tennessee

The murder rate in Memphis is 28.5 per 100,000.

7. Dayton, Ohio

The murder rate in Dayton is 26.4 per 100,000.

8. Shreveport, Louisiana

The murder rate in Shreveport is 25.7 per 100,000. There were 59 murders in Shreveport last year. We are not expected to get to that number this year.

9. West Palm Beach, Florida

The murder rate in West Palm Beach is 24.2 per 100,000.

10. Washington, D.C.

The murder rate in Washington, D.C., is 22.8 per 100,000.

The list shows Little Rock at #17, Dallas is 18 while Houston comes in at #20 on the list.
