A 63-year-old Louisiana man is dead after his twin engine plane crashed off the coast of Destin, FL Tuesday night.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office says that Al Habetz of Louisiana died after his plane crashed around 8:30pm Tuesday. KATC reports that Mr. Habetz is from the Acadiana region.

Several people on the beach saw the plane go down Tuesday night and that's when reports started to come in to authorities. A search and rescue effort was launched off the coast in Destin and that's when the pilot's body was recovered.

Authorities do not believe anyone else was on the small plane when it when down into the gulf.

The plane remained on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday night, but theThe National Transportation Safety Board, along with Wildlife and Fisheries, plan to retrieve it Wednesday morning.
