Parents all over Longview have some stress off their backs. 87% of students in Longview ISD qualify for free lunches. However, Longview Independent School District has announced that all of their elementary students will be fed at school, for free. The stress of "Did I remember to pack their lunch?" According to CBS 19, Come August 2019 "Every Longview ISD elementary student will receive free breakfast and lunch from the cafeteria thanks to the federal Community Eligibility Provision [CEP] program.
The LISD Board of Trustees approved the measure during Monday night's regular meeting." This amazing initiative links back to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The Community Eligibility Provision makes possible for schools that have populations with high poverty rates give free breakfast and lunch to students. As of now, we know that the program will run for three years with an option to have the fourth year of free meals if the school board chooses so.
