‘American Horror Story’ Season 7 Tackling 2016 Election, Says Murphy

As if the American Horror Story name didn’t prove topical enough during the 2016 election, Season 7 may make the connection literal. Creator Ryan Murphy claims that next season will follow “the election that we just went through,” but how specifically might he mean?

Where previously FX seemed to reverse course in suggesting that Season 7’s theme would again be kept secret, Murphy rather candidly revealed the news on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live (via TVLine):

I don’t have a title, but the season that we begin shooting in June is going to be about the election that we just went through … I think that will be interesting for a lot of people.

Seemingly caught off-guard, host Andy Cohen inquired if that would include a portrayal of Donald Trump, to which Murphy offered “Maybe.” For the record, it isn’t entirely clear if Murphy meant to suggest that American Horror Story Season 7 would feature an election story paralleling ours, or a literal (if likely horror-tinged) retelling.

Previously, Murphy revealed that series staples Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters have confirmed their returns, though he’d only just started writing. Last we heard, Season 7 “does have a big hook behind it,” one that might feature the return of several characters from American Horror Story: Freak Show. Additionally, a separate upcoming season might bring together Murder House and Coven characters, to say nothing of whatever “secret season” Murphy has reportedly been writing, or the ocean theme teased after American Horror Story: Roanoke.

We’ll likely hear FX or Murphy clarifying his remarks before long, but might American Horror Story Season 7 really take on the election? Will we ever manage to gain distance on this thing?
