I'm sure you've seen wood duck boxes set up around area ponds, but do you know how the ducklings get out of the box?

My friend Elliott has 5 wood duck boxes on his pond, and each box, at last estimation, had around 20 eggs. He usually gets around a 90% hatch rate, that means almost 100 ducklings will eventually make their way out of the boxes. Elliott was able to video when one of the brood left the box this morning:

A wood duck box is built without pegs for the birds to roost upon, which means that when the ducklings are ready to leave the nest, they have to jump up to the hole to get out. Interesting fact: the ducklings usually leave the box within 24 hours of hatching!

Thank you, Elliott, for capturing the first major hurdle in this duck's life!
