We've all heard how the crawfish are going to be plentiful in the Shreveport / Bossier City area this year because of the rain and the temperature.  Carter actually wrote a great story on it here. That's awesome!  Know what else is going to be plentiful this year because of the rain and temperatures?  Mosquitoes (and mosquito bites)!  That's not so awesome.

Unfortunately, they are no where near as delicious.

Conditions are so perfect that we could start seeing them now.  That's right, we aren't even protected by Old Man Winter anymore!

If temperatures are above 50 degrees, mosquitoes will not be affected.  As (bad) luck would have it, our average this month is 54 degrees.  YAY!

"But, what about the very few freezing days we've had?"  The little so-and-so's have that covered as well.  According to KSLA, Mosquitoes can live through below-freezing temperatures because of a type of anti-freeze in their blood, plus mosquitoes lay winter-hardy eggs this time of year. Those eggs can withstand brief periods of freezing temperatures.

Here's how to avoid the little nasties:

1. Wear mosquito repellent - preferably with deet

2. Avoid standing water - like buckets, kiddie pools, and toys in the backyard

3. Try not to get too hot - Mosquitoes have heat vision, like little Navy SEALS.
