Early this morning, Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings died at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

According to officials with Cummings' office, the Congressman was dealing with many health challenges.

Elijah Cummings has served as a Congressman since his election in 1996, and most recently he was serving as the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, one of the committees that is overseeing what is happening with the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The Democrat from Maryland was born in Baltimore, and he had served in their House of Representatives before being elected to Congress.

Cummings died at around 1:45 a.m. Central time this morning at the age of 68.

Cummings was a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law, and he practiced the trade for twenty years before moving on to serve his district in Congress.

Elijah Cummings was the husband to Maya Cummings, and he leaves behind three children.
