Cross Lake in Shreveport Is Closed

The heavy rains we have gotten this week are causing problems on Cross Lake. All boat ramps are closed and the lake is closed to boat traffic because of rising water.

The level on Cross Lake has risen to 170.9 feet. It is expected to crest on Friday at 173.5 feet.  Flood stage on the lake is 172.5 feet.

Residents around the lake are already experiencing issues with the high water. Some boat houses are flooding. Water is now approaching dozens of homes.

Folk who live around the lake are urging the city to do more to prevent this kind of flooding event in the future.

John Kay says the current closing is completely justified. He says this rising water is pushing water into people's homes and boathouses. Not to mention pushing boats out of their slips.

Randy Davis was more direct in his post on Facebook about this problem:

The City Employee who was responsible for making the decisions to open the flood gates has retired. Now we have a new useful idiot in charge who's failed to understand the gates must be open BEFORE the rain comes as Cross Lake has a huge watershed extending over into East Texas.... So, more water can flow into the lake than the flood gates can release..... So, you've got to get ahead of it or we get high water and flooding, and damage. As long as the City employee fails to take 5 minutes to look at a weather forecast we'll continue this man-made dilemma. You can't fix STUPID!!!!!
