DOTD lays out plans for increased safety measures at a ceremony honoring Johnny Cole, an employee killed on the job when he was struck by an 18-wheeler this summer.  DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says they will implement a spotter for two-person crews.

“It is to see if the vehicles, especially with the growth of inattentive drivers, to make sure they are not drifting and are paying attention,” said Mallett.

Mallett says cones will now be placed further back from a work area equipped with a bell or alarm mechanism.

“When these cars hit it, not only should it draw attention to the driver of the vehicle but also it will give the people in the work zone time to react as well,” said Mallett.

DOTD is also buying 70 trailers with bright flashing LED arrows.  Mallett says safety vests will also change from orange to a neon yellow.  There will also be brighter lighting on top of vehicles.

“You are going to see a bright green amber, it is going to be a new flashing pattern.  It is very impressive to see, even in the daytime and at night you can see it miles away,” said Mallett.
