George Washington is one of the most significant figures in American History. He was a military leader, a founding father, a statesman and the 1st President of the United States. Obviously, there is a whole lot more to George than that...but that's a brief rundown of Washington's impressive resume. I'm not going to say the US wouldn't exist without George Washington...but he certainly played a major, major role in the formation and development of this country.

With all that said, wouldn't you like to celebrate the 4th of July like the founding fathers? Well now you can! A few years ago, the New York Public Library published George Washington's personal home brew recipe. So, you can literally brew the same beer Washington and the founding fathers of this country were drinking to celebrate their big win over England to earn our independence!

If you're interested, here is George's personal recipe:

To Make Small Beer

Take a large siffer [Sifter] full of bran hops to your taste. Boil these 3 hours. Then strain out 30 gallons into a cooler. Put in 3 gallons molasses while the beer is scalding hot or rather draw the molasses into the cooler & strain the beer on it while boiling hot. Let this stand till it is little more than blood warm then put in a quart of yeast. If the weather is very cold cover it over with a blanket & let it work in the cooler 24 hours then put it into the cask. Leave the bung open till it is almost done working. Bottle it that day week it was brewed.

Now, if you're not in the whole brew your own beer thing, but still want to celebrate like one of the Founding Fathers, you can thanks to the fine folks at Budweiser. Last year, Bud released Freedom Reserve, which is a Red Lager based on George's personal recipe.

If all else fails and you can't find the special Bud and you don't want to brew your own...you can always drink Pabst Blue Ribbon!
