Just hours after the tornado warning across New Orleans and parts of south Louisiana had expired, the day's devastation had been confirmed. No fewer than seven tornadoes tore through New Orleans and the surrounding area, leaving broken homes and buildings - not to mention lives -in their wake.

Almost miraculously, no deaths were reported. A count at local hospitals showed 25 people were treated for mostly minor injuries.

Gov. John Bel Edwards dispatched the National Guard to help state and local police patrol and protect the hardest-hit areas.

In Orleans Parish two tornadoes were reported, and two more touched down in Livingston Parish. A single funnel hit the ground in Tangipahoa, Ascension and St. James Parishes.

Emergency crews continued to work into the night, searching damaged homes and clearing roads in the parts of town sustaining the most damage.

More than 10,000 people were without power in the metro New Orleans area, plus another 2,000 were in the dark in nearby Orleans, Ascension and Jefferson parishes.
