Nine Films That Could Be Affected by the Weinstein Company Scandal
As more and more woman come forward with new allegations of abuse against Harvey Weinstein, the film distribution company he co-founded with his brother Bob is reportedly negotiating a possible sale. The Weinstein Company has nine upcoming films on its slate, including The Current War; over the weekend, the potential awards contender had its release date pushed back from this fall to an undetermined date in 2018. But that’s not the only film that could be affected by the scandal surrounding the company’s former executive.
According to TheWrap, The Weinstein Company has entered into a “preliminary agreement” to receive “an immediate capital infusion” from private equity firm Colony Capital. Details and terms of the agreement are unknown — along with the future of nine films on TWC’s upcoming slate. That list includes Paddington 2, scheduled to open in the UK next month. Following last week’s firing of Harvey Weinstein and the resignation of several TWC board members, Bob Weinstein insisted that the company was not in the process of closing or being sold, and that Paddington 2 would still hit theaters as planned. Below, we break down the nine films that could be impacted by the company’s potential sale in the wake of the growing number of allegations against Weinstein:
In addition to movies, the company already has a few television projects that have been affected by the scandal: Though Amazon nixed an upcoming series from David O. Russell and Julianne Moore, the studio picked up (and fully took over) The Romanoffs — the star-studded new series from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner. TWC also has Waco, a true-crime series about the infamous siege starring Taylor Kitsch and Michael Shannon. So far, it’s unclear if or how the series, currently set to debut in 2018, will be affected.
