How many friends do you have? Facebook "friends" don't count. I have 4800 Facebook friends, most of whom I've never met. A recent survey of 2,000 people reveals the average adult hasn't made a new friend in 5 years.

Our ability to make new friends declines as we mature and age. Children are great at making new friends. Adults, not so much. Research indicates our ability to make new friends peaks in our early 20's. After that, factors like aversion to the "bar scene" ( I don't care for being surrounded by drunk strangers.), shyness, career, and family obligations reduce our ability to bond with new people.

For whatever my two cents is worth, the number of friends you have isn't critically important. It's been said, "If you have 5 good friends, your life is full."
