A new report from Inspection Support Network has taken a close look at metropolitan areas in the US with the oldest housing. Given the constraints on the supply of new housing, due mainly to the availability of construction materials and their rapidly rising costs, many more homebuyers are looking at already existing homes. ISN researchers ranked the various metro areas according to the median age of existing housing units, and included the percentage built prior to 1940 as well as the percentage built since the year 2000.

The ISN analysis found that in the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area, 21.4% of existing housing units were built since the year 2000, compared to 3.4% built prior to 1940. Overall, the median age of Shreveport homes is 39 years. Here is a summary of ISN's data for our area:

  • Median age of existing housing units: 39
  • Percentage of housing units built prior to 1940: 3.4%
  • Total housing units built prior to 1940: 6,246
  • Percentage of housing built in 2000 or later: 21.4%
  • Total housing units built in 2000 or later: 39,587

And how do statistics for our area compare to the averages from around the USA?

  • Median age of existing housing units: 41
  • Percentage of housing units built prior to 1940: 12.3%
  • Total housing units built prior to 1940: 17,219,141
  • Percentage of housing built in 2000 or later: 20.4%
  • Total housing units built in 2000 or later: 28,443,093

To determine the cities with the oldest homes, ISN calculated the median age of the existing housing market, including both owner-occupied and renter-occupied units.
