Which Louisiana School District Was Ranked the Worst in the State?

KNGT | Louisiana — Schools are back in session here in Southwest Louisiana, and while the kiddos are getting used to early mornings, homework and sitting in a classroom again, I got to thinking about something. I wonder which school district in Louisiana has been ranked the worst?

Well, I went looking, and according to a ranking shared by World Population Review, that unwanted Louisiana award goes to.....Madison Parish School District. Now before anybody in Madison Parish starts throwing pencils at me, I didn't make the list. I'm just telling y'all what I found. And there's a little more to this story than just saying one school district is "the worst."

Louisiana Has 72 School Districts

According to World Population Review, Louisiana has 72 school districts in the data they used. Their page lists the worst school district for every state, and when you get down to Louisiana, Madison Parish School District is the name sitting there. There's something important you need to know about this ranking, though. The World Population Review page is current, but its table says the "worst school district" ranking comes from 2021 data originally credited to 24/7 Wall St. So this isn't somebody going through Louisiana schools this week and handing Madison Parish a trophy nobody wants.

Still, it got my attention. Especially because Louisiana itself doesn't exactly knock it out of the park when education rankings come around. World Population Review puts Louisiana among the 10 lowest-ranked states for education, along with Alabama, Mississippi, Oregon, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, Arizona, Alaska and New Mexico.

That ain't exactly the Top 10 list you wanna make. There's More Behind Those Numbers. I know most people wanna blame the teachers, its not that easy. There are some GREAT teachers in Louisiana. We've got some right here in Southwest Louisiana who spend their own money, stay late, show up early and love those kids like they're their own.

School performance can also be tied to things happening outside the classroom. Poverty, attendance, support at home, school funding and other problems can all play a part. And when I looked deeper into Madison Parish, I found another reason why I don't think we should just slap a "worst school district" label on them and move along.

Louisiana's own report card data gave Madison Parish an overall D, with a system performance score of 52.1. But the district received a B for student progress. In other words, there were serious struggles, but there were also students making progress.

You can have two kids sitting in the same classroom with the same teacher and they can have two completely different lives when they leave school. One goes home to somebody helping with homework. Another may be worried about what they're gonna eat that night. One might have both parents pushing them. Others might be dealing with things that kids shouldnt have to deal with.

Still, with school starting back up here in Southwest Louisiana, it sure made me think about education in our state. We might joke about Louisiana being at the bottom of different lists, but education is one where I think we'd ALL like to see Louisiana start climbing. Because at the end of the day, those numbers ain't just numbers. They're our kids.
