Earlier this month, while the rest of America was celebrating National Night Out, we were parked as closely as possible to the nearest air conditioning vent and wondering how anyone could spend an evening outdoors in heat like this.

And it's because of our extreme heat in these parts, we don't celebrate National Night Out in early August like those in cooler climates. We need things to cool off a little; at least down to just hot, not Satan is controlling the thermostat, hot.

That said, here in the northwest corner of Louisiana, we won't celebrate National Night Out until October 6, however, the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office is already accepting applications for street-blocking permits from residents in the unincorporated areas of Caddo Parish who wish to close their streets for block parties for the night's event.

If you are one of those in an unincorporated area of Caddo Parish (outside any city limits) and you'd like to submit an application, simply stop by either the Sheriff's north or south substation, or the Patrol Office at 4910 North Market Street in Shreveport.

That form is also available on the Caddo Sheriff's website HERE at CaddoSheriff.org.

Once you've accessed the form, fill it out and submit it online or email it to welcome@caddosheriff.org. Or you can submit the form in person at any of the substations mentioned above.

Completed applications must be submitted to the nearest Caddo Sheriff's office substation by 4:00 pm on September 30. If approved, the permit will allow you to block portions of your street.

National Night Out is an opportunity for residents to take a stand against crime by participating in neighborhood gatherings and crime prevention events.

Sheriff Henry Whitehorn, Sr. stated, "It's a great opportunity to meet your neighbors, show support for law enforcement, and learn what's happening in your community. Criminals can't win if we are united in our approach to fighting crime. We must have a T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) attitude."
