Between searching for the best sushi and chasing down the latest food fests, I’ve been keeping a close eye on our local Shreveport-Bossier community. But today, I’m looking at something hitting us all right in the wallet, nd it’s not exactly "sweet."

Have you noticed your Easter baskets looking a little light lately? It’s not just you. Since the start of this decade, the traditional Easter basket has lost nearly half its candy, even as we’re spending more than ever to fill it.

According to a new InvestorsObserver analysis, the money just isn't stretching like it used to.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Since 2020, most shoppers have increased their candy budgets by about 15%. That sounds reasonable, right? But here’s the kicker: prices have actually jumped a staggering 67% in that same timeframe.

To put that into perspective for our 318 families, if you’re spending the same $93 on candy today that you spent six years ago, you’re walking away with 40% less chocolate. It’s a slow burn, a few cents here, a quarter there, but those incremental changes have added up to a total impact that’s hard to ignore.

Shrinkflation is Real

They tracked five staples, Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs, Cadbury Mini Eggs, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Cadbury Creme Eggs. The pattern was the same across the board: steady price hikes and, in some cases, "shrinkflation" where the packages quietly got smaller while the price tags grew.

What This Means for Shreveport

In a community that loves our traditions, from Mardi Gras beads to Easter egg hunts, this feels personal. Are we reaching a breaking point? Is the price increase enough to make you rethink the tradition entirely?

I want to know: Will these prices deter you from going all out this year? Is it time to retire the "big" Easter basket and find a new way to celebrate?

Drop a comment and let me know, are you still team chocolate, or are you over the price hikes?

History Of Geek'd Con Guests

Geek'd Con is Shreveport's biggest comic and pop culture event. Launching in 2015, the event quickly became one of the premiere comic con style events in the entire state of Louisiana.

A big part of that growth has been the celebrity guest lineups. Since the first show in 2015, the quality of guests attending Geek'd Con rivals any pop culture event of this size. From classic Star Wars stars to guests from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Geek'd Con has welcomed the biggest names from multiple generations.

Because there have been SO MANY guests since 2015, we can include all of them here. This is just a look at the history of guests at Geek'd Con.
