Sausage Bandit Strikes in South Louisiana — But That's Not the Strangest Heist We've Seen

Police say a woman in South Louisiana has earned herself a salty nickname after allegedly stealing meat from multiple stores, including links of sausage, but while her antics have sparked more jokes than jail time so far, it turns out the “Sausage Bandit” is hardly the strangest thief to make headlines.

From snacks to garden gnomes, humans have a long and weird history of taking what isn’t theirs, sometimes leaving us scratching our heads more than clutching our wallets.

So in honor of Louisiana’s meat-loving marauder, here are three other truly bizarre thefts that prove truth really is stranger than fiction.

The Great Nutella Heist

In 2013, German authorities reported that thieves stole five tons of Nutella from a parked trailer in the town of Bad Hersfeld. Estimated value? Over $20,000 (in 2013 dollars).

At first, police weren’t sure if the motive was resale or just an extremely sweet tooth. Either way, the sticky situation had the whole town wondering how you hide that much hazelnut spread and why someone thought it was worth the risk.

A Bridge • Yes, a Whole Bridge

In 2011, a group of scrap metal thieves in the Czech Republic used fake paperwork and heavy machinery to dismantle and steal a 33-ton pedestrian bridge. The gang told locals they were authorized to remove it due to structural issues.

By the time anyone noticed something was off, the bridge was gone, along with thousands of dollars’ worth of steel. Now that’s dedication to the craft.

400 Pumpkins Disappear Overnight

In New Jersey, a farmer was stunned in 2022 when he woke up to find nearly 400 pumpkins missing from his patch. The theft happened in the middle of the night, likely requiring multiple trips...or one very ambitious thief with a lot of trunk space.

Local residents were baffled, but the pumpkins were never recovered. To this day, it's still unclear whether it was a Halloween prank or just an oddly specific craving.

So… Why Sausage?

Back here in Louisiana, the Sausage Bandit has become something of a running joke, but for store owners trying to stop the meat madness, it's no laughing matter. Authorities continue to investigate as the suspect reportedly targets meat sections in multiple parishes.

Even so, you’ve got to wonder, is this for profit or just someone with a really high cholesterol addiction.
