Regardless of whether or not you think former President Donald Trump should be president again, he is the current leading candidate for the Republican nomination in the upcoming presidential election.  In fact, currently, Trump leads the nearest competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, by a wide margin.

According to a recent poll released by The Hill:

In a hypothetical nine-way Republican presidential primary, Trump takes 58 percent support among GOP voters, adding 3 percentage points to his already-staggering lead since last month. His closest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, notched only 16 percent in the survey – a 4-point downturn since the previous survey.

In a recent interview with CNN, Senator Bill Cassidy said he didn't believe Trump would be able to win.  You might remember Senator Cassidy joined six other Republican senators, including Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Maine Senator Susan Collins, Utah Senator Mitt Romney, Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, and North Carolina Senator Richard Burr to vote to impeach then President Trump for his role in the January 6th attack on the Capitol.  Cassidy released a video on Twitter stating:

Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person.  I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty.

Cassidy told CNN:

“In the last election cycle, we saw in almost all of the swing states – Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona - … that the candidates for Senate that Trump endorsed all lost,” he said. “If you’d taken the votes that went to other Republicans and put them together, those Republicans would have won. So, I think the president’s kind of high-profile endorsement of those candidates actually hurt those candidates – at least in the general election."

“So, if past is prologue, Trump will have a hard time in those swing states, which means he can’t win a general election.”
