Shreveport Fights Drunk Driving as Holidays Approach
Shreveport is one of the cities leading the state in DWI arrests, but efforts have been stepped up to make sure drivers don't get behind the wheel under the influence.
For the holidays, there will be extra police on the roadways all across the state looking for drunk drivers. This is the statewide campaign known as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”. This effort has started and it will run through New Year's Day.
Greg Fischer with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says there’s traditionally an increase in drinking and driving during the holiday season.
"For whatever psychological reason, drinking and driving has traditionally been a problem around Christmas time and New Year’s.”
Fischer says the holiday season has traditionally been deadly on Louisiana roadways due to drinking and driving, and last year was no different.
Around this 3 week period, we had 6 fatalities due to drinking and driving across our state and we also had 80 people who were seriously injured in an alcohol-related crash.
Fischer says if you plan on having a good time and possibly drinking alcohol at a holiday gathering, it's ok to do that, but be sure you have a plan to be sure you get home safely. "Use the rideshare services that are available, or call a taxi or have a designated driver.”
