City Of Shreveport To Build Police Substation

SHREVEPORT, LA - City leaders take a step forward to bring more police protection to our neighborhoods. Police Chief Wayne Smith will join with other city and business leaders to get the ball rolling on the city's first police substation. They will gather on Thursday at noon to break ground for this complex.

This complex will be built in the 1500 block of North Market Street on the north side of town. This piece of property was donated to the city by the North Shreveport Business Association. Police officials say that group has shown "a commitment to fostering a safer community and the Shreveport Police Department extends its heartfelt gratitude for this significant contribution."

Chief Wayne Smith says this new substation aims to strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the community, providing residents with a direct point of contact for assistance and fostering a proactive approach to public safety.

Chief Smith adds:

"This substation is a testament to our commitment to working hand-in-hand with the community we serve.”  This substation is at the location of the old Moran Galvanizing plant, a 2.5 acre tract on North Market near North Hearne Avenue.

In addition to the police substation, the north Shreveport location will also be a satellite location for Northwest Family Justice Center. The center provides support services and resources for victims of domestic violence.

How Will Substations Be Paid For?

In 2021, a $70M bond issue passed to fund public safety projects.  Three Police substations were part of that package.  Mayor Tom Arceneaux says the city is currently putting together the cost projections and will move on the first two locations and then determine how much of the money is left before moving forward on a 3rd location.
