Shreveport Man Wanted for Rape Tries to Disarm Officer During Arrest

While investigating an allegation of second-degree rape, Shreveport Police Sex Crimes Detectives came into contact with a Shreveport man.

As part of the ongoing investigation, SPD Detectives obtained a search warrant for a home on Coty Street. Crime Scene Investigators responded to assist with the execution of the warrant, and items of evidence were seized.

Patrol Officers also detained Izayah Benson after he was identified as an individual matching the description provided by the victim.

While SPD tried to detain Benson, he made the dangerous decision to attempt to take a gun from an Officer. Benson physically resisted officers, requiring several Officers to become involved before he could be taken into custody.

Benson was arrested and charged with:

· Attempting to Disarm a Police Officer

· Resisting an Officer

"At the Shreveport Police Department, we take any attempt to disarm a police officer extremely seriously. A struggle over an officer’s firearm can turn deadly in seconds. This encounter could have ended very differently for everyone involved.

The investigation into the second-degree rape allegation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be considered as detectives continue their investigation."
