(Tyler, Texas) It appears as if a group of small robots has become local celebrities in Tyler, Texas. While completing their programmed mission, these robots are making new friends along the way. They're even pausing for selfies with those who spot them doing their job.

Tyler Residents Are Falling in Love With These Robots

These little robots were deployed in early June and have quickly become a hit on social media. People are walking up to them and interacting with them, and getting their picture taken with the robot wearing a neon green safety vest.

One Robot Already Met an Unfortunate Fate

The robots do not appear to have names or wear numbers; they all look the same. Unfortunately, one of the three that were initially deployed in the city met an early demise after it was struck by a vehicle. In another video I saw on social media, one Tyler citizen tracked one down in her neighborhood to replace its 'hat', or top covering, that fell off while it was going about its inspections.

Tyler residents could see up to eight of these robots roaming their neighborhood over the next couple of weeks. Residents are encouraged to let the robots continue their work, but it's okay to say hello and snap a selfie.

What Happens After the Data Is Collected?

According to a City of Tyler press release, this team of robots will be in the field collecting information on approximately 94.5 miles of sidewalks and trails and associated curb ramps, 122 signalized intersections, and 59 transit stops. Tyler ADA Coordinator Michael Howell says,

This effort will give us a clearer, more comprehensive picture of conditions across Tyler’s pedestrian network and will help inform future planning and prioritization. This methodology lets the project team cover more ground in less time. It also makes responsible use of project resources."

The robots will only be deployed during daylight hours. If one appears to be lingering at a street corner or in a specific area, it's probably finished with a task and waiting for its new assignment.

The robots are expected to complete the project by early July.
