It's no secret that I'm a huge advocate for youth sports in Amarillo and the panhandle area. I've been a part of the youth baseball scene since I moved here four years ago and have enjoyed nearly every minute of it.

Before my boys ventured into the travel baseball, they started with a rec program in Austin. It was a program that had been around for decades and some of the kiddos playing were second generation players in the program.

I actually joined the board for the program to help improve it and make it one of the best programs in the city. The program was wrapped around fun, exciting baseball without the stress and drama of travel baseball, and yes, there is plenty of drama there.

One of the biggest things we planned each season was opening ceremonies for the program. It was open to everyone, whether you had a kiddo playing or not. More of a community event as opposed to just a baseball event.

We would grill up hot dogs and hamburgers, have fun games for the kiddos to play, as well as baseball games going on all day. We'd also bring in someone to throw the first pitch of the season to kick things off.

Well, Hereford is doing something similar this weekend on March 29th, and if you get a chance to go, I'd highly recommend it. They're always a good time and they've got some great stuff lined up for it.

The opening ceremonies kickoff at 10 am, Caviness will be out there from 11 to 1 slinging some tasty hamburgers, and there will be baseball and softball games going on all day for your enjoyment.

There will also be a Boots vs. Badges game where local first responders will duke it out on the field against each other.

So get on out there, support the community and all the kiddos who love this wonderful game that I've had a love affair with since I was three years old.
