(Lafayette, Louisiana) - The holidays are here, and you can see that many are excited to celebrate them by the decorations in yards and even on their vehicles.

The holidays are always so much fun because people really get into the "spirit." While homes have been decorated for generations during the holiday season, a new trend in recent years seems to be decorating your vehicle.

You may have seen the antlers and red noses some put on their vehicles to depict a reindeer; that's not new, but there's something else drivers are adding to their vehicles that has been laughing while in traffic.

Have you seen a vehicle on the roads this holiday season with the elf legs sticking out from the trunk of a car? If you haven't, keep your eyes open because they are out there now. The purpose of the decoration of the elf's legs is to portray that an elf is halfway in the trunk while its legs are on the outside of the car.

Now, here's where the problem comes with the elf's legs on the back of some vehicles. The license plates on some cars I have seen on the roads this Christmas season are covered.

License Plate Laws in Louisiana

The license plate must be clearly visible and legible, and cannot be obscured by anything, including a substance, electronic device, or electrochromatic film. Plus, the plate on your vehicle must be maintained free from foreign materials.

In the photo above, you see the elf's legs hanging from the car, and a large portion of the plate is obscured, which could lead to a traffic stop and a potential ticket/traffic fine.

So, I share this with you to remind you that while many are adding this Christmas decoration to their cars, they are also breaking a state law, and we don't want you or someone you may know to be pulled over for this infringement.

I say, find a way to keep the elf hanging from your car, but do not let its legs get you pulled over this holiday season. We know that some elves can be naughty, but don't let it spoil this holiday season.
