If you're a customer of Walmart stores you could potentially be eligible to receive up to $500 as part of a class-action lawsuit from 2022 in which the company agreed to pay $45 million.

Don't get too excited about how much money you might get back from the store, but you should still look into this issue.

Information about the settlement can be found on this website. If you shopped in the store for certain citrus products between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, you could be eligible for part of the settlement.

Each person's part of the settlement will be capped at $500. You are also being asked to provide your receipts for your purchases. Now, you can still get between $10 and $25 if you don't have your receipts. Again, the website provides more information.

What Did Walmart Do?

Walmart did not say they had done what was claimed in the lawsuit, but that they would settle for $45 million in the best interests of the company.

The lawsuit claims that Walmart

.....inflated the weight of certain grocery items, mislabeled the weight of bagged produce--including oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines--and overcharged for sold-by-weight clearance products, there forcing customers to pay more for them than their lowest advertised price.

That quote is from an article in NPR. Not everyone is going to be eligible, and it's going to take up to several months possibly for claimants to receive any money.

The settlement still needs final approval. In June there will be a court hearing to determine the final status of the class-action suit.
