The New Orleans Police Department is adding another "officer" to their mounted unit.

One of my favorite attractions in parades is the horses that are part of a police department's mounted unit. If you've been to any parades in Lafayette or New Orleans you've likely seen them at the start of the parade.

Well, the NOPD is adding another officer to their mounted unit and it comes in the form of a mini-horse. Yes, meet a three-foot-tall horse named Patch.

Patch is 15 years old and has only one eye, hence the name.

The small horse reportedly came from a breeder on the North Shore and its primary goal will be to keep others in the mounted unit company, while offering emotional support for officers.

If you'd like to meet Patch you can attend an event that the NOPD is hosting. The event is called “Horses, Hops, and Cops” and it is set to happen on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the horse stables in City Park.

Being that we are in the social media age, Patch does have its own Facebook Page and Instagram Account. For some great photos and videos, you may want to visit the pages and even show the photos with your kids.

It will be interesting to see if Patch ever makes it into a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans.  We hope Patch does make it into the parade as we already know who will steal the show!
