Some in Louisiana Will Get Two Social Security Checks This Month

And just like that Louisiana has moved through Mardi Gras, Easter, Crawfish Season, St Patrick's Day, Festival International, and now it's May. That means kids will be graduating and mothers will be celebrating. And for some Social Security recipients in Louisiana, there will be a cause for celebration too. That will come in the form of two checks in one month.

But before you can understand that, you need to know this. Standard Social Security payments are made based on the recipient's date of birth. People who are born on the first through the tenth of the month are paid on the second Wednesday.

The people born on the eleventh through the twentieth get paid on the third Wednesday. Those who were born on the twenty-first through the thirty-first are compensated on the fourth Wednesday.

People who were getting Social Security before May of 1997 or if you receive both Social Security and SSI you get paid on two separate dates. The first of the month for SSI and the third of the month for Social Security.

Now, if you are familiar with these benefits then you know the checks usually arrive in your mailbox on the first of the month. The only exception to that rule of thumb is when the first of the month happens to fall over a weekend. In that case, the payments are sent out a day earlier.

For the month of May, those who receive these kinds of benefits will be getting two checks in the mail. The first one should be arriving today, May 1st. The second check is not due to you until June 1st but because of a quirk in the calendar, you won't get paid then. Since June 1st falls on a Saturday most SSI payments will get to recipients the day before on May 31st.

Let us make this very clear, you are not getting "an extra check". You are getting the check that is due to you a few days early. So don't think you're getting more money than what you are supposed to get, you'll just have it available to you one day sooner. The same thing will happen again in August.

And you can expect another "two check" month in November of this year and also in December. Again, the reason for the two checks in the same month has to do with the day of the week that the beginning of the month falls on.
