(KMDL-FM) The ugly Christmas sweater. It used to be the exclusive domain of the overweight white guy. We had ugly sweaters for Christmas and cheap and tawdry tropical shirts for every other occasion. Now, ugly Christmas sweaters have gotten trendy. So, what was once simply a tribute to grandmotherly love and design has now gone high-tech, internet-influenced, and decidedly sexual.

So, basically, ugly Christmas sweaters have mirrored society as we know it. And I have to admit, the Internet as a community is undefeated when it comes to starting, stopping, and quashing trends and trendsetters, so for now, let's go with the flow as it pertains to the ugly holiday sweater.

Why Men Love Ugly Christmas Sweaters

For most men, at least men in South Louisiana, the concept of wearing sweaters is a bit foreign. We seldom have sweater weather, and when we do, we are seldom doing things outdoors that are sweater-appropriate. The holidays are the lone exception.

Not only can we spruce up our holiday wardrobe with something warm, but we can also bring our unique brand of humor and poor upbringing to the social events we attend. My big fear in this parade of tinsel-coated togs is that the ugly sweater, like the Halloween costume, will get overtly sexual. I am all for teasing and fun, but even a few of the sweaters we have included dance right on the line of poor taste.

I guess it depends on where one might choose to wear one of these sweaters. For most men, they would wear them anywhere. For most women, they would not want to be seen with those men.
