$2.9 Billion Tariff Refund – How Walmart Plans to Give That Back to You
(KMDL-FM) For the past year and some change, the business and retail landscape has been muddled by on-again, off-again import policies from the Federal Government. In many cases, retailers such as Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, and others passed those higher business costs on to you. Now that the courts have ruled those tariffs illegal, you might be wondering, "Are we getting our money back?"

The Federal Reserve estimated that about 1/3rd of price increases brought on by higher tariffs were passed on to consumers. We were told that foreign businesses would pick up that tab; they didn't. We were also told that American businesses would absorb the higher costs; many tried, but more did not.
Walmart Reveals $2.9 Billion Tariff Refund Strategy for Consumers
Walmart has revealed what it plans to do with the $2.9 billion; yes, that figure is correct, according to TheStreet.com. Walmart does have a plan to return that money to your hands, but it won't be in the way most of us wish it would, in the form of cold, hard cash.
The retail giant suggested in its quarterly filing that the additional money brought on by the illegal tariffs will be invested in customer initiatives and price mitigation strategies. The plan is for Walmart to unleash what have been described as "aggressive pricing strategies" in order to build foot traffic in brick-and-mortar locations and increase consumer spending via online sales.

Other retailers that are also receiving quite a bit of money back from the court ruling involving the implementation of tariffs, such as Home Depot and Lowe's, have plans to use the tariff income for consumer-focused price strategies. Also, both retailers say the additional revenue will help to offset higher fuel costs and production costs, which should allow them to maintain current level pricing.
Based on the information that we have researched, we can find no large-scale retail operation with plans to send you an actual check or refund money to your account because of any higher prices you might have paid because of the tariff changes. There has been a lot of talk and political posturing, but no official plan has been introduced.
Does The Federal Government Still Have Plans to Issue Tariff Refund Checks?
We should note that the federal government also suggested that consumers would be getting tariff dividends or checks because of all the money that was raised. It does not appear that those checks will be forthcoming to consumers as well.
There was a new proposal introduced to Congress by Representative Valerie Foushee of North Carolina. Representative Foushee's legislation would provide refundable tariff rebates to qualified married couples and families up to $4,000. But it appears as though that "money" would arrive in households in the form of tax credits instead of "spendable disposable income".

So, the best we can hope for out of the current confusion and chaos over tariffs is maybe some lower prices at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, and other large retailers. And if you do have shopping to do, these items are on sale right now.
