Measles Update July 2025: Cases Persist in Midland‑Odessa and West Texas
It's insane how it is 2025, and we had a measles outbreak in Midland-Odessa and also in West Texas. While media outlets are not reporting it daily as they had been earlier this year, it remains a persistent issue in our region.

Update July 2025: Scope of Measles In West Texas
The recent flare-up began back in January 2025. Gaines County alone has reported over 400 confirmed cases in 2025 and was designated an "outbreak county". According to Fox 4 News, that designation has recently been retracted. As of early July 2025m the Midland County Health Department has confirmed its sixth case. MRT reported that the origin has been linked back to Midland Memorial Hospital.
West Texas overall has seen its fair share of cases, which include Gaines, Midland, Lubbock, El Paso, and the surrounding areas, and has over 755 confirmed cases, which include two fatalities, and close to 100 people who have been hospitalized.
Origins Linked To Current Vaccination Rates
It has been determined that the 2025 outbreak was linked to counties with low MMR vaccination rates, which may include under-vaccinated religious factions. It was also stated that nationwide, the average dropped to 92.7% in terms of Kindergarten vaccinations.
Prevention
There isn't a sure-fire way to prevent getting the measles. However, certain precautions can be taken to assist in prevention. Washing hands, wearing a mask, and staying a reasonable distance from other people appear to be the best way to prevent catching the measles. Have you known anyone who has contracted measles in 2025?
