With Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez both out for the next season of ‘American Idol,’ speculation continues to swirl about who might replace them. Original ‘Idol’ champ Kelly Clarkson says she’s not interested in the job, but she would like to see Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood get a shot.

“I don’t want to be a judge. Mentor is more my style,” Clarkson told Us Weekly. “And not just mentoring, getting to be a part of the song with them, getting them amped up — from our rehearsals to stage, it’s so exciting being onstage. It’s fun!” Clarkson got to play the role of mentor and duet partner on the recent season of ‘Duets,’ which ended Thursday night with the coronation of J. Rome, while Clarkson’s protege Jason Farol placed third.

When asked if Underwood would make a good judge, the ‘Dark Side’ singer didn’t hesitate. “She would! Didn’t she major in journalism or something? And she can have that face… that bluff face! She can put that on! She would be good.” Clarkson was right — Underwood did study journalism and mass communication at Northeastern State University.

Clarkson and Underwood are two of the most successful artists to come out of ‘Idol’ during its 11 seasons. Underwood has the vocal chops and the commercial success to justify a spot on the panel, with multiple platinum albums, successful tours and awards.

So far, names like Adam Lambert and Mariah Carey have been discussed as possible replacements for Tyler and Lopez. Who would you like to see at the judging table? Do you think Carrie Underwood would be a good choice?
