Louisiana State Police are urging Louisianans to stay weather alert and informed of travel conditions as we brace for freezing temperatures coming our way.

As winter weather makes it's way through Texas, icy road conditions have caused a massive 100 vehicle pile-up, resulting in dozens of serious injuries and loss of life.

Could we experience the same dangerous icy conditions here in Acadiana? As of now it certainly looks like it and State Police are warning and urging motorists to prepare and be aware.

KATC reports LSP say that "freezing rain and sleet can cause bridges and overpasses to ice quickly, as temperatures near the freezing point. If conditions deteriorate, motorists are encouraged to refrain from driving until conditions improve."

If we experience ice on bridges and overpasses, Louisiana State Police say they will work with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development as well as local law enforcement to take necessary action and precautions.

LSP are expecting road closures throughout the state and want to remind motorists to check road conditions and closures with the 511 phone system, 511la.org, or Louisiana 511 smartphone app.

From KATC -

Throughout the weather event, Troopers will be actively patrolling to monitor roadway conditions and assist stranded motorists. LSP offers the following winter weather driving tips:

    • Avoid unnecessary travel
    • Reduce speed and allow extra time to reach your destination
    • Increase your following distance behind other vehicles
    • Do not drive using the cruise control in icy conditions
    • Anticipate stops (such as stop signs and traffic signals) and brake gently while stopping
    • If you encounter a skid, take your foot off of the accelerator and steer into the skid until you regain control
    • Use low beam headlights if it is raining or sleeting
    • Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained
