Maggie Warwick, for decades, had been a huge advocate to save Shreveport's music history. She may have been the greatest local crusader on that front. Sadly, we lost Maggie earlier this month.

But, as with most legendary musicians, their bodies may be gone but their spirit and music truly live on forever. In fact, Maggie was featured on a recent Sun Records compilation album.

It seems that every year on Record Store Day, there is a new release celebrating the history and artists that recorded for the legendary Sun Records. This year, when I picked up Sun Records Vol. 6, the first name and song I noticed on the track listing was Margaret Lewis (Maggie's pre-marriage recording name) - Kangaroo of Love.

Just to be clear, Maggie never worked with Sam Phillips (legendary producer of Elvis and Johnny Cash and original owner of Sun Records). She worked with Shelby Singleton (Shreveport guy, by the way) who bought Sun Records from Sam. Either way, still pretty awesome to record and release a song on Sun Records.

Apparently, the folks from Record Store Day (who curates these albums) wanted to celebrate the impact of women on the recording industry and chose one of Maggie's songs for the record. Which is pretty awesome and a much deserved honor. If you've never heard "Kangaroo of Love", you can listen to the track below. Even though Record Store Day is over, there was still a copy or two at Day Old Blues Records in Shreveport. Or you can pick up a copy online.
